Dual Enrollment

The Dual Enrollment/Early Release program for Huntsville City Schools allows students to receive both high school and college credit for certain academic or career technical education courses. Eligible courses can be taken through an Alabama Community College System (ACCS) institution while enrolled in high school for the purpose of earning credits for a high school diploma and/or a postsecondary degree.  Dual enrollment credit is available to students attending, public, private, parochial or church/religious schools pursuant to 16-28-1 of Code of Alabama 1975, or who are receiving instruction from a home school/private tutor pursuant to 16-28-5 of the Code of Alabama. Dual enrollment credit in career-technical education is awarded under State Board of Education Policy 801.03 and 801.04. Scholarship opportunities may be available to students that meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the dual enrollment program.

In particular, Huntsville City Schools has a developed partnership with local colleges to offer this opportunity to students. Students can participate in academic or specialized elective classes that exceed the course work offered in the high school setting at either Calhoun Community College, Drake State Technical College, or the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Additionally, based on state eligibility guidelines and the joint consent order with the Department of Justice,  Huntsville City Schools has developed criteria for students wanting to participate in this program.

·         The District will offer dual enrollment opportunities on an equitable basis at all non-magnet high schools in the District.

·         The District will ensure that dual enrollment courses do not compete with the College Academy program.

·         The District may permit students at non-magnet high schools to enroll in one dual enrollment course per year.

Students who seek to take more than one dual enrollment course per year must seek permission from the Superintendent or his/her designee; requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This limitation does not apply to career technical dual enrollment courses.
