Five Schools Named “National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence”
Five Huntsville City Schools were recognized today as a “National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence” at the organization’s 2016 National Conference in Orlando, Florida. Principals and staff from the Academy for Academics and Arts (AAA), Challenger Elementary, Grissom High, Huntsville High, and Weatherly Elementary, were on hand to receive the coveted Lighthouse Award to honor each school’s achievements. The Huntsville City School District now has a total of 12 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.
Schools are identified and selected for the award by the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Organization based on achievement of excellent performance in nine major categories, including areas such as; challenging standards and curriculum, active teaching and learning, technology integration, leadership and educational vitality along with school, along with family and community partnership. Only a small number of schools from across the nation are selected each year for recognition as a Blue Ribbon School.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Conference is a four-day professional development event that provides practical best practices and solutions for educators. Faculty members from the Huntsville School District also shared their award winning strategies with administrators from across the country, as a part of the many breakout sessions offered during the conference.
Three other Huntsville City Schools, Challenger Middle, Mountain Gap P-8, and Lakewood Elementary, were presented a “Points of Light” Award for their efforts to work toward school improvements. Just last month, the Academy for Science and Foreign Language received the U.S. Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon School Award for their major achievements in academics.
